Colombia's President Declares 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' should American Forces Invades.

Donald Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing tensions bilaterally following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Claims

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable armed intervention against Colombia, asserting Colombia is also "very ill" and “run by a problematic figure involved in producing cocaine and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia is the leading producer of cocaine, there is no evidence linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally involved in the illicit industry.

A Deteriorating Relationship

The country was historically a staunch collaborator of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and received wide political approval in the US capital, however, the relationship have soured markedly since Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Strong Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if a military operation comparable to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and I am not involved in narcotics," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"If they [the US] bomb rural communities, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the mountains. And should they arrest the nation's leader, which a significant portion of the country loves and respects, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Fighter to Leader

The president dedicated a period in his early life belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting a new constitution in the early 90s and eventually served as an influential politician. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning president.

"I made a vow not to touch a weapon again ... but for the homeland I shall resume weapons once more," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Broad Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, but voices from all sides of Colombian politics have rejected the notion of a US attack on Colombia.

Political and Economic Pressure

American authorities revoked Petro’s visa after he encouraged American soldiers to disobey orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes targeting Petro, his spouse and various associates.

Simultaneously while America bolstered its military presence in the Caribbean and bombing suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed strikes on boats in Pacific waters near Colombia.
