The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
