Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
